Liberté

You know this figure — the raised arm, the crown — but you've only ever met her across the water in New York. Here her gaze is turned away, smaller and darker, at home.

A dark figure against the golden tunnels of the Gare d'Orsay, ornate gold patterning the walls behind her. The dark against all that gold is what carries the piece, the oranges and blues pushed bright enough to stop you in a doorway.

This is the Statue of Liberty as Paris keeps her — France's own, standing in the museum that was once a railway station.

Imagine the small jolt when a guest realizes which Liberty this is, and starts asking where you must have been standing to find her.
